The Golden City of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is simply unmatched. It was the part of the famous Silk Route during the days of yore. The splendid Jaisalmer Fort stands proudly on its land and narrates the stories of the valor and chivalry of the Rajput rulers. Jaisalmer still retains its medieval charm, which is evident in its colorful narrow streets, splendid forts and palaces of Rajasthan, opulent havelis and bazaars. The otherwise barren land of Jaisalmer comes alive once every year during winters. It is the time when the festivities of Desert Festival slowly start engulfing the Desert City. During the festival in Jaisalmer, the city displays the wealth of its culture and traditions to the rest of the world. The History of Jaisalmer has a charm of its own. Like all other cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer too has its own glorious past to boast about. History of Jaisalmer draws heavily from the history of the Rajputana. The city is said to be founded by one Raja Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput ruler, in approximately 1156 A D. Legends go by that he did it on the behest of a local hermit named Eesaal. The raja choose Trikut hill as the new site for his fort. This was because he thought that his previous abode at Luderwa (16 km from present Jaisalmer) was vulnerable towards possible enemy assault.
This exuberant festival of Jaisalmer is generally held in the end of January or in the beginning of February every year in the sand dunes of Sam, which is 42km away from Jaisalmer. The desert festival in Jaisalmer was initiated in order to attract foreign tourists, who always look forward to explore more and more facets of Rajasthan. This no-nonsense festival showcases a variety of Rajasthani folk songs and dance to promote Jaisalmer culture and traditions. The Rajasthan tourism organizes Jaisalmer Desert fair/festival. ‘Help cells’ are set-up to solve the problems faced by foreign tourists. The local administration monitors the arrangements and medical vans equipped with all the essential medical facilities, are kept on call in case of an emergency.

“Our guide Saleem was a great cook and took good care of us. The night at the desert was cold and harsh, but still a nice experience to see all the stars in the sky. Kamal was so nice to help bring our luggage from one hotel to another on his bike. Paid 40 euros pp for a 24 hours safari.!”
“Rafiq the owner was very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed.. he provided all the information accurately and stayed true to his promises. Our camel rider Saleem was very good.. especially his cooking skills. He cooked us an excellent restaurant quality meal from complete scratch .. in the desert.. over an open fire. Delicious! The camels were fun to ride and the desert area was vast and beautiful. It's a shame people litter the place though.. was my only complaint. Do your part.. help educate the locals by setting the example.. don't pollute India any more then it already is.. please.!”
“Getting out into the desert on a camel was a great contrast to the intense experience of rajasthani cities. Hotel Garh Villa did an excellent job picking us up from our hotel, providing us with an English speaking guide and helping us out with the transit out of jaisalmer. We stayed the night at a dune removed from the more crowded ones. Our guide was also an accomplished camel driver and an excellent chef. A recommended experience!!”
